The ingredients for success

The Strait of Canso is a truly unique economic region in Nova Scotia, Canada that is poised for growth.

Our foundation is strong – built on the quality of place, people and innovation. We have plenty of available land, a history of embracing large industrial developments, a high-quality workforce and an engaged private sector with a can-do attitude.

In other words: we have the right ingredients to thrive and adapt to a changing and evolving economic development paradigm.

  • Pro-growth Leadership: An interconnected network of senior collaborators, entrepreneurs and industry players, public and private, provides investor connectivity into an innovative and supportive ecosystem.
  • Diversified Offering: The Strait features 16 core industries, including technologically advanced manufacturing and processing operations, ocean technology and the marine sector, energy, as well as transportation and supply chain leaders, among many other sectors.
  • Strategically Positioned: The Strait of Canso includes areas of both Cape Breton Island and Mainland Nova Scotia, serving as a global gateway into North America, with easy access to American, European and African markets.
  • Transportation Linkages: In addition to marine connectivity, the region has an airport (Allan J. MacEachen Port Hawkesbury Airport) with a 5,000ft runway, rail access provided by Genesee & Wyoming Inc. with connectivity though Truro, and 100-series highway connectivity, which is in the process of being twinned.
  • Marine and Oceans Sector Innovation: The Nautical Institute of the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) Strait Area Campus offers leading marine technology and training in support of the area’s oceans sector. The planned Marine Innovation Centre will complement both existing assets and the operating environment for testing new technology.
  • A track record of success: The Strait offers a port with established national success. The port features an oceans cluster that includes a long-established industrial history in large scale and traditional industries, along with success transitioning to the new economy, including a leading role in alternative energy generation.
